Sister Dorothea Kunz, SSJ, 90

Sister of St. Joseph Dorothea Kunz died Aug. 2, 2012. She was 90 years old.

Sister Kunz entered the congregation from her home parish of Holy Family in Rochester in 1940. She graduated from Nazareth College in Rochester in 1944 with a bachelor’s degree in math and general science. In 1945, she earned a master’s degree in calculus and geometry from Cornell University.

In 1945 she began teaching mathematics at Nazareth Academy where she remained for two years. In 1947, she was assigned to teach mathematics at Nazareth College. In addition to teaching, Sister Kunz became chairman of the math department in 1951, a post she held until 1963. Then from 1963-76, she served as the director of community education as well as continuing as an associate professor. Sister Kunz was appointed education coordinator for the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1992 and served in this position until 1999. Upon retirement in 1999, she became an official infirmary visitor and served in prayer ministry.

She is survived by her brothers, Francis (Joan) and Robert (Dorothy) Kunz; her sister, Sister Joan Margaret Kunz, SSJ; and by her sisters in the congregation

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at the motherhouse chapel on Aug. 6, 2012, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
