Sister Edwarda McCarthy of the Sisters of St. Joseph died Sept. 25, 2005, at the congregation’s motherhouse at the age of 86.
Prior to entering the congregation in 1941 from her home parish of St. Patrick, Victor, she had earned a bachelor’s degree in French from Nazareth College. She later earned a master’s degree in French from Laval University.
Sister McCarthy taught French at Nazareth Academy, DeSales in Geneva, Elmira Catholic High and Mt. Carmel in Auburn. Her last teaching assignment was at St. Agnes High School, Rochester, where she also was chairman of the language department. From 1984 until her retirement in 2002, she served at the motherhouse as receptionist, French tutor and in the Religious Life Resource Center.
She is survived by her sister, Bernadette Lacey; nieces, nephews and cousins; and her sisters in the community. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated Sept. 27, 2005, in the motherhouse chapel with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
