Sister Elaine Theresa Mulcahy, 85

Sister of St. Joseph Elaine Theresa Mulcahy died Oct. 6, 2010, at the age of 85.

Sister Mulcahy entered the congregation in 1947 from her home parish of St. Ambrose in Rochester after graduating from Nazareth College in Pittsford with a bachelor’s degree in English and sociology. In 1957, she also earned a master’s degree in English from Nazareth College.

She began teaching at St. Agnes High School in 1949 and spent the next 22 years educating young women both there and at Nazareth Academy. In 1970, her focus turned to the rural area and she ran the faith-formation program in King Ferry for four years. She then became the pastoral assistant in Lansing, where she remained until 1979. She served as a dietary aide at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira and as a receptionist at the motherhouse in Pittsford. From 1983-93, she worked as a nursing aide at St. Joseph’s Convent Infirmary. In 1993 she returned to her first love and became a teacher’s aide at Rochester’s Corpus Christi School until she retired in 2001.

Sister Mulcahy is survived by her sister, Dorothy (James) Scheible; her brother-in-law, James Keenan; her sister-in-law, Carol Mulcahy; many nieces and nephews; and by her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on Oct. 11, 2010, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph Ministry Fund, 150 French Road, Rochester, NY 14618.
