Sister of St. Joseph Elizabeth Conheady died May 19, 2016. She was 88 years old.
She entered the congregation in 1957 from her home parish of the Church of the Assumption, Fairport. She earned a physical-education degree from Cortland State Teachers’ College, now known as SUNY Cortland, in 1949. She completed a master’s of science in education from Nazareth College in 1962 and a master’s of science in guidance from St. Bonaventure University in 1972.
In 1960, Sister Conheady taught science at Nazareth Academy. From 1967-83, she served as a guidance counselor at Mount Carmel High School, Auburn, and at Nazareth Academy.
Sister Conheady then felt called to serve prisoners, so she became a chaplain at Groveland Correctional Facility in 1983. She was promoted to senior chaplain in 1988 and served there until her retirement in 1997.
During her retirement, Sister Conheady volunteered at a hospice program, then as a parish volunteer at St. Bridget/St. Joseph, East Bloomfield, and later at St. John, Lyons. She moved to the motherhouse in Pittsford in 2011.
Sister Conheady is survived by her niece and her sisters in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel in Pittsford on May 25, 2016, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
