Sister Mary Eileen FitzGibbons, a Sister of Mercy for 82 years, died Oct. 13, 2013, at the age of 103 at the Mercy Center in Brighton.
Born Dolores Margaret FitzGibbons, she was a native of Hornell and grew up in St. Ann Parish. Sister FitzGibbons entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1931 and taught for the next 47 years in the following diocesan schools: St. Andrew, St. Mary and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, all in Rochester; St. Joseph, Penfield; St. Louis Pittsford; and Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Cecilia, St. Mary and St. Patrick, all in Elmira. She was the convent cook at Our Lady of Lourdes, Elmira, for one year before moving in 1979 to the Mercy Center, where she lived in retirement and served as a receptionist for several years. On her 100th birthday, Nov. 18, 2009, she was feted with a well-attended party at the Mercy Center.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, including Sister Veronica Casey, RSM, as well as her other sisters in the congregation.
Sister FitzGibbons’ funeral Mass took place Oct. 16, 2013, at the Mercy Center. Interment was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rochester.
