Sister Helen Goschke, SSJ, 90

Sister of St. Joseph Helen Goschke (formerly Sister Francis Helen), died on June 15, 2011, at the age of 90.

Sister Goschke entered the congregation in 1943 from Holy Redeemer Parish in Rochester. She earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology, French and philosophy before entering the congregation, then earned a master’s degree in history in 1963 at Nazareth College in Pittsford. In 1975, she received a master’s degree in religious education from Loyola University.

Sister Goschke taught at St. Agnes, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Francis Xavier, Holy Rosary, Most Precious Blood and St. Augustine, Rochester; St. Rose, Lima; and St. John the Evangelist, Spencerport. In 1968, she went to King Ferry where she led the religious-education program for five years. She then became a pastoral associate at St. Margaret Mary Parish in Irondequoit and later at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Brockport until 1990. She remained in Brockport for five more years and managed the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults program. She then retired to the motherhouse in Pittsford where she took part in prayer ministry.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Oralee K. Goschke; many nieces and nephews; and her sisters in the congregation. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on June 20, 2011, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
