A teacher in diocesan schools for 44 years, Sister Imelda Wuest of the Sisters of St. Joseph died June 22, 2004, at the congregation’s motherhouse in Brighton. She was 86.
Entering the congregation from her home parish of Holy Family in Rochester in 1935, she earned two bachelor’s degrees in education from Rochester’s Nazareth College.
Her teaching assignments included St. Augustine, St. Ambrose, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Francis Xavier and Holy Rosary schools, in Rochester; St. Alphonsus, Auburn; St. Anthony and St. Mary, Elmira; St. Mary, Canandaigua; St. Rose, Lima; St. Michael, Penn Yan; St. Mary Our Mother, Horseheads; and St. Stephen, Geneva.
She then taught remedial math at St. Patrick in Seneca Falls after which she served as a driver at the motherhouse until her retirement in 1995.
Sister Wuest in survived by her sister, Martha Hunt; her sister-in-law, Florence Wuest; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and her sisters in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on June 25, 2004, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 150 French Road, Rochester NY 14618.
