Sister Jamesetta Slattery, SSJ, 90

Sister of St. Joseph Jamesetta Slattery died Sept. 21, 2007, at the motherhouse in Pittsford. She was 90 years old.

Sister Slattery entered the congregation in 1935 from her home parish of St. Monica in Rochester. She received a bachelor’s degree from Nazareth College in Pittsford in 1943 and a master’s degree and a doctorate from Catholic University in 1949 and 1953, respectively. She completed post-graduate study at Marquette University, St. Louis University and Fordham University.

She taught for nine years at Rochester’s St. Ambrose School then was director of teacher training at the motherhouse from 1951-63. She served as principal of Nazareth Academy in Rochester before becoming codirector of the Lighted Schoolhouse Project in Rochester. In 1967 she began working at Nazareth College, where she served in various positions, including director of study service and director of the graduate program.

Although she retired in 1990, she served as acting president of Nazareth College from August 1993 until January 1994 while a new president was being sought.

She is survived by her sister, Josephine Touhey; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel Sept. 24, 2007, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 150 French Road, Rochester, NY 14618.
