Sister Jane Marie Mulligan, SSJ, 82

Sister of St. Joseph Jane Marie Mulligan died Sept. 4, 2007, at the congregation’s motherhouse in Pittsford. She was 82 years old.

Sister Mulligan entered the congregation in 1942 from her home parish of St. Monica in Rochester. She received a bachelor’s degree from Nazareth College in 1946, a master’s degree in English from Cornell University in 1951 and a master’s degree in sacred science from St. Bonaventure University in 1969.

She taught English and religion at Elmira Catholic High and Nazareth Academy for 24 years. In 1970 she served as a nursing aide at St. Ann’s Home for a year then earned an associate’s degree in nursing from Monroe Community College and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Nazareth college in 1982. She worked as a staff nurse and then as a head nurse at St. Ann’s Home until 1991. She then became staff nurse at the convent infirmary, and she lived at the motherhouse where she served at local coordinator and nursing assistant until her retirement in 2001.

Sister Mulligan is survived by her nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at the motherhouse chapel on Sept. 7, 2007, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 150 French Road, Rochester, NY 14618.
