Sister of St. Joseph Jeanne Smith (formerly Sister Jeanne Louise) died Jan. 27, 2013, at the age of 87.
Sister Smith entered the congregation in 1943 from Rochester’s Holy Rosary Parish. She began her ministry of housekeeping in 1945 at the motherhouse in Pittsford. From 1948-57, she served as a cottage supervisor at St Joseph’s Villa, where she developed lifelong relationships with some of the children she cared for. She continued her ministry as housekeeper/cook at Holy Rosary, St. Anne and Sacred Heart Cathedral convents. In 1974, she continued this community service, but developed an extensive skill and interest in the art of ceramics. She shared her gifts with others by teaching ceramics classes.
She is survived by her nieces, Patricia Guthrie and Kathleen Rowley; several grandnieces and grandnephews; and by her sisters in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on Feb. 1, 2013, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Sisters of St Joseph Ministry Fund, 150 French Road, Rochester, NY 14618.
