Sister Joan Vincent Giaconia, SSJ, 91

Sister of St Joseph Joan Vincent Giaconia died on Sept. 21, 2011, at the age of 91.

Sister Giaconia entered the congregation from her home parish of St. John the Evangelist, Spencerport, in 1946. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1955 and a bachelor’s degree in English in 1969, both from Nazareth College in Pittsford.

She taught at St. Augustine and Sacred Heart Cathedral schools, Rochester; St. Alphonsus, Auburn; St. Paul, Oswego; and Immaculate Conception, Ithaca. In 1982, she returned to Sacred Heart where she worked as librarian, tutor and remedial reading teacher. In 1998, she began serving as sacristan at the cathedral, a ministry she delighted in until 2008, when she moved to the motherhouse in Pittsford due to failing health.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Virginia Giaconia; many nieces and nephews; and by her sisters in the congregation. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on Sept. 27, 2011, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph Ministry Fund, 150 French Road, Rochester, NY 14618.
