Sister of St. Joseph, Joseph Gilmary Russell died April 18, 2015. She was 90 years old.
She entered the congregation in 1942 from her home parish of St. Monica in Rochester. She earned a BE in 1950 and a BA in English and social studies in 1954 from Nazareth College. In 1978, she earned an MS in education, also from Nazareth College.
She taught at St. Alphonsus, Auburn; Mother of Sorrows, Greece; Our Lady of Lourdes, Brighton; and Sacred Heart Cathedral, Rochester, before being assigned to St. Mary in Auburn, where she served as principal.
From 1966-75, she was congregational regional superior, and became principal at St. Jerome, East Rochester in 1975. She remained there until 1986, when she became assistant superintendent of personnel for the Diocese of Rochester.
In 1993, she became administrator of the motherhouse in Pittsford. Five years later, she served as coordinator of St. Joseph Convent Infirmary until her retirement in 2003.
She is survived by her sister, Dorothy (Sue) Sugrue; nieces, nephew; and her sisters in the congregation.
Her memorial Mass was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on April 24, 2015, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
