Sister Josepha Kennedy, SSJ, 81

Sister of St. Joseph Josepha Kennedy (formerly Sister Rose Alice) died Oct. 9, 2009, at the motherhouse in Pittsford. She was 81.

Sister Kennedy entered the congregation in 1946 from Ss. Peter and Paul Parish in Elmira. She earned a bachelor’s degree in voice and piano in 1950 and a master’s in music education in 1958, both from Nazareth College, and in 1969 received a PhD in music from Columbia University.

Sister Kennedy spent 10 years teaching in various diocesan schools, including Holy Rosary and St. Monica, Rochester; St. Theodore, Gates; St. Aloysius, Auburn; and St. Mary, Waterloo. In 1960 she became an assistant professor of music and English at Nazareth College. After completing her PhD, she returned to Nazareth College as a full professor of music and music history. In retirement she served as church organist and cantor at Rochester’s Blessed Sacrament Parish.

She is survived by her sisters, Mary C. Gregan, Sister Mary Siena Kennedy, SMSM, and Rosemary K. Paulson; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; her dear friend, Norma Scavilla; and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated on Oct. 13, 2009, in the motherhouse chapel with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
