Sister Lillian Maher, SSND, 94

School Sister of Notre Dame Lillian Maher (formerly Sister Mary Eduardo) died April 19, 2011, at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton, Conn. She was 94.

Sister Maher grew up in Malden, Mass., and professed her first vows as an SSND in 1938.

She began her teaching career in 1939, and taught at various Catholic schools in Massachusetts and New York, including Holy Family School in Rochester from 1957-59.

In 1991 she moved into community service for the St. Saviour community, and in early 2007 she retired to serve in prayer and presence at Lourdes Health Care Center, adjacent to Villa Notre Dame, home to retired School Sisters of Notre Dame in Wilton, Conn.

Sister Maher earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1958 from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.

Her Mass of Christian burial was celebrated April 27, 2011, in the chapel at Villa Notre Dame in Wilton, Conn., with burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bethel, Conn.

She is survived by a sister, Edwina England of Naples, Fla.; a nephew and two nieces; and her sisters in the congregation.
