Sister Marciana Koesterer, SSJ; ministered in health care

Sister of St. Joseph Marciana Koesterer, who spent more than 60 years ministering in health care, died Sept. 17, 2023. She was 81 years old.

Sister Koesterer entered the congregation in 1960 from her home parish of Immaculate Conception in Rochester. She attended the Isabella Graham Hart School of Practical Nursing at Rochester General Hospital and earned her license of practical nursing in 1970.

Sister Koesterer worked as the baker in the motherhouse kitchen from 1962-64. She was then assigned as a nurse aide at St. Ann’s Home and remained there until she completed her studies. She worked as an LPN at St. Ann’s Home, St. Mary’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s Convent Infirmary from 1970-83.

In 1983, Sister Koesterer began doing private-duty nursing with Tender Loving Care Agency, and then in the Jonathan Child Apartments, both in Rochester. In 2001, she returned to the motherhouse to serve as nurse for the next 11 years. Sister Koesterer then returned to private-duty nursing, and in 2021, she moved to Trumansburg to care for residents there.

Sister Koesterer is survived by her sister, Joan Mason; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at the motherhouse chapel Sept. 23, 2023, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
