Sister of Mercy Margaret Caufield, formerly Sister Benedict, died Dec. 21, 2008, at age 87.
Sister Caufield entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1941 from St. Monica Parish in Rochester and professed her perpetual vows on Aug. 24, 1947.
She was an instrumental and school music instructor, supervisor of music for the Diocese of Rochester, and director of parish music at Rochester’s St. Andrew and St. John the Evangelist parishes. In retirement she assisted people in planning funeral liturgies.
She is survived by her brother, John J. (Marguerite) Caufield; sisters, Sister Ann Caufield and Sister Janet Caufield; brother-in-law, James Quigley; sister-in-law, Thirza Caufield; many nieces and nephews; and her sisters in the congregation.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 27, 2008, at St. John the Evangelist Church, Rochester, with Father John Mulligan presiding. Interment was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
