Sister Margaret Rose Aungier, SSJ, 92

Sister of St. Joseph Margaret Rose Aungier (formerly Sister Teresa Carmel) died March 7, 2013, at the age of 92.

She entered the congregation in 1940 from her home parish of Immaculate Conception in Syracuse. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1948 from Nazareth College of Rochester.

Sister Aungier taught at St. Paul, Oswego; Immaculate Conception, St. Lucy, Our Lady of Good Counsel, St. Monica and Sacred Heart Cathedral, Rochester; St. Alphonsus, Auburn; and St. John, Greece. In 1971, she took a nurses’ aide training course to prepare for her new career with Visiting Nurse Service. She worked as a visiting nurse from 1974-84, traveling either on foot or by bus to see her patients.

In 1984, Sister Aungier began serving as a parish visitor and sacristan at Blessed Sacrament Church in Rochester. She continued in these ministries until she moved to the motherhouse in Pittsford in 2003 because of failing health.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Aungier; nieces and cousins; her faithful friend, Marjorie Handel; and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on March 14, 2013, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
