Sister of St. Joseph Marie Stephanie McCaughey, died June 12, 2008, at the congregation’s motherhouse. She was 87 years old.
Sister McCaughey entered the congregation in 1941 from her home parish of St Joseph in Perry, N.Y. She graduated from Nazareth College in Pittsford in 1944 with a BS in music, and earned a master’s degree in music from Rochester’s Eastman School of Music in 1949.
She began teaching at the Nazareth Conservatory and at Immaculate Conception School in Rochester in 1943. From 1946-74 she taught music at Rochester’s Nazareth Academy. In 1974 she became the music teacher at Rochester’s Nazareth Hall, where she remained until 1989. She then retired to St. Joseph’s Convent Infirmary and served as a receptionist, lector and sacristan.
She is survived by her cousins, Sharon Holtz and Katherine Bailey; many friends; and her sisters in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated June 17, 2008, at the motherhouse chapel with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
