Sister of St. Joseph Marjorie Burger (formerly Sister Valerian) died Nov. 29, 2011. She was 87.
Sister Burger entered the congregation in 1942 from Holy Family Parish in Auburn. At Nazareth College in Pittsford, she earned bachelor’s degrees in education in 1948 and in English and general science in 1958. She earned permanent certification in science in 1973 from St. Bonaventure University.
Beginning in 1946, Sister Burger taught at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Rochester; Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Brockport; and Most Precious Blood, Rochester, where she also served as principal. From 1964-77, she taught math and general science at St. Agnes High School in Rochester. From 1977-86, she worked at St. Ann’s Home in Rochester, and for 10 years after that, she was a medical secretary at St. Joseph’s Convent Infirmary. After retiring, she volunteered for eight years at Benincasa/Advent House as a hospice worker.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Lorraine Burger; many nieces and nephews; and her sisters in the congregation. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated Dec. 7, 2011, at the motherhouse chapel in Pittsford, with burial Dec. 9, 2011, in Auburn.
