Sister Mary Albina Kowalczuk, SSND; Rochester native

School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Albina Kowalczuk died at Lourdes Health Care Center, Villa Notre Dame, Wilton, Conn., on April 18, 2010. She was 101 years old.

Sister Kowalczuk grew up in Rochester’s Holy Redeemer Parish and attended the parish school. She entered the congregation in 1924.

She taught in the Baltimore Archdiocese and in Miramar, Puerto Rico, before returning to Rochester, where she was a teacher and administrator for the next 40 years, mainly at St. Boniface, St. Philip Neri and St. Margaret Mary schools. Beginning in 1980, she began a variety of community services at the School Sisters of Notre Dame center in Wilton, serving as an occupational therapist aide, working in medical records and volunteering in the Notre Dame Child Development Center until her 2001 retirement.

She is survived by a niece and four nephews, and her sisters in the community.

Her Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 21, 2010, in the chapel of the School Sisters of Notre Dame at Villa Notre Dame in Wilton, followed by interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bethel, Conn.
