Sister of Mercy Mary André Streb died Jan. 27, 2016. She was 93 years old.
Sister Streb entered the congregation on Sept. 6, 1939, and professed her final vows on Aug. 24, 1947.
A graduate of Our Lady of Mercy High School in Brighton and St. James Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Hornell, Sister Streb served at St. James Mercy, where she was a head nurse in several departments as well as director of nursing services. In Brighton, she was a nurse in the infirmary for the Sisters of Mercy and at Our Lady of Mercy High School.
In 1973, she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing education from Marquette University. She then became a nursing instructor at St. James Mercy School of Nursing. She also was instrumental in adding physical therapy to the hospital’s programs. Later, she was a public health nurse for Steuben County and an ombudsman for the Steuben County Office of the Aging before retiring to prayer ministry at Mercy Center in Brighton.
Sister Streb is survived by her sister, Bernice Allen; many nieces and nephews; dear friend, Mary Jane Price; and her sisters in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at Mercy Center on Feb. 1, 2016, with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
