Sister Mary Audrey Mazzeo, SSJ, 97

Sister of St. Joseph Mary Audrey Mazzeo died on Jan. 30, 2009. She was 97 years old.

Sister Mazzeo entered the congregation in 1933 from her home parish, St. Francis of Assisi in Auburn. After completing her studies at Nazareth Normal School, she was assigned to St Mary’s Boys’ Home in Rochester. Then for three years she provided nursing care in the motherhouse infirmary.

In 1942, she began a long career in office work, serving at Nazareth College and St Ann’s Home, Rochester; and St Joseph’s Hospital, Elmira. From 1959-64 she served as portress at the motherhouse, then returned to St Joseph’s Hospital. She filled many roles at the hospital, including seamstress, secretary and receptionist in the school of nursing, and office clerk in the business department. She retired to the motherhouse in 1990, where she continued for many years to share her wonderful sense of humor with all those whose lives she touched.

She is survived by her niece, Rose Angela Hogan; her nephews, Michael Mazzeo Jr., Louis Riccio and Henry Mazzeo; many grandnieces and grandnephews; and by her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel Feb. 3, 2009, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 150 French Road, Rochester, NY 14618.
