Sister of St. Joseph Mary Brigid McCarthy, who served in various ministries during her more than 78 years as a Sister of St. Joseph, died Dec. 13, 2022. She was 97 years old.
Sister McCarthy entered the congregation in 1943 from her home parish of St. Mary, Elmira. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history and English from Nazareth College in 1950 and a master’s degree in religious education from Providence College in Providence, R.I., in 1963.
She began teaching at Holy Rosary in 1946. She also taught at Nazareth Hall and St. Anne, Rochester; St. Theodore, Gates; St. Stephen, Geneva; and St. Mary and St. Patrick’s Junior High/Holy Family Junior High, Elmira.
After retiring from teaching in 1990, Sister McCarthy became a parish visitor for St. Casimir Church and a school aide at Holy Family Junior High, both in Elmira. In addition to these ministries, she also served as receptionist at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira.
In 2007, Sister McCarthy moved to Rochester and became hospitality director at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse in Pittsford until her retirement in 2012.
Sister McCarthy is survived by her nieces, nephews, friends and her sisters in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel Dec. 17, 2022, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
