Sister Mary Carmel Uschold, a Sister of St. Joseph for more than 80 years, died Jan. 3, 2007, one month short of her 99th birthday.
A native of St. Augustine Parish in Rochester, she joined the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1925, subsequently earning her teacher’s certificate and her bachelor’s degree in education.
She taught in diocesan schools for more than 50 years, serving at St. Agnes, Avon; Ss. Peter and Paul, Elmira; St. Mary, Canandaigua; St. Thomas More, Brighton; St. Pius Tenth, Chili; and St. Ambrose, Holy Rosary and Nazareth Hall in Rochester.
Following retirement, she resided and worked part time at the motherhouse. In 1987 she moved to the convent infirmary where she served on the staff of the Religious Life Resource Center.
Sister Uschold is survived by her cousin, Sister Agnes Barbara Hettel of the School Sisters of Notre Dame; friends Marcia and David Zimmerman; and her sisters in the congregation. Her funeral Mass was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on Jan. 6, 2007, followed by burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
