Sister of St. Joseph Mary Christopher Kuchman, who was a nurse for 70 years, died June 22, 2022. She was 94 years old.
Sister Kuchman entered the congregation in 1946 from her home parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Rochester. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1951 from Nazareth College and a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Buffalo in 1973.
Sister Kuchman was assigned to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Elmira, as a student nurse and then as a nurse supervisor in 1952. She served as an instructor at the hospital as well as at Nazareth College. In 1964, she was appointed director of the school of nursing at Good Samaritan Hospital in Selma, Ala. She worked tirelessly to get the school fully accredited by the state.
Sister Kuchman returned to St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1970 as the community health coordinator. In 1979, she was hired as the discharge planning coordinator.
From 1985-98, she lived in Waterloo and served as a public health nurse in Seneca County. She remained in Waterloo as parish minister at St. Mary Church and served as reach-out minister until 2017, when she moved to the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse in Pittsford.
Sister Kuchman is survived by her nieces, nephews, friends and her sisters in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel June 27, 2022, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
