Sister of St. Joseph Mary Doran, (formerly Sister Marie Matthew) died May 2, 2015. She was 84 years old.
She entered the congregation in 1948 from her home parish of St. Mary in Canandaigua. She earned a BS in education and a BA in history in 1954 from Nazareth College. In 1968, Sister Doran earned an MA in education from St. Bonaventure University.
She taught at Holy Rosary and Blessed Sacrament in Rochester, and St. James in Waverly. In 1965, she was assigned to St. Agnes High School, where she taught and served as a guidance counselor. She then became principal at Blessed Sacrament in 1968 and returned to being a guidance counselor at Nazareth Academy from 1969-83.
In 1983, Sister Doran began a new career in pastoral ministry. She interned at St. Paul in Oswego for one year before accepting a position at Our Mother of Sorrows, Greece, as pastoral assistant. She remained there until 2004, when she was assigned as chaplain at Monroe Community Hospital. She retired in 2009 because of failing health and continued her ministry of prayer at the motherhouse.
She is survived by her siblings, Eileen (Bud) Ross, Kathleen O’Neil, Paul (Margie) Doran, Charlie (Anne) Doran, Jean Coyne and Sheila Berrettone; many nieces and nephews; her sisters-in-law; and her sisters in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on May 8, 2015, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
