Sister Mary Lee Bishop, a native of St. Anthony Parish in Groton, N.Y., died May 16, 2006, at the Sisters of St. Joseph motherhouse at the age of 70.
Sister Bishop, formerly Sister Ramon, received her bachelor’s degree from Nazareth College prior to joining the congregation in 1958. She subsequently earned a master’s degree in Latin from Cornell University and pursued additional studies in French.
She taught foreign languages at Nazareth Academy from 1961 to 1971. She was then campus minister at Cornell University until 1978 when she returned to Nazareth to again teach languages until 1991. Following a sabbatical year, she worked in the SSJ Justice and Peace office before using her expertise as a grant writer until her retirement in 1997.
Sister Bishop is survived by her cousin, Jerald (Jay) McPeak; her special friend, Sister Susan Nowak; and her sisters in the congregation. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on May 23, 2006, followed by burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
