Sister Mary Maloy, SSJ, 82

Sister of St. Joseph Mary Maloy (formerly Sister Anne Joseph) died Aug. 26, 2008, at the congregation’s motherhouse in Pittsford. She was 82.

Sister Maloy entered the congregation in 1944 from her home parish, Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Latin and English in 1948 from Nazareth College in Pittsford and earned a master’s degree in Latin from Notre Dame University in 1958.

In 1948, Sister Maloy was assigned to Nazareth Academy in Rochester, where she taught Latin and English. In 1966, she served for a year as assistant director of novices and then moved into guidance, earning a permanent certificate in 1971 from SUNY Brockport. She served as guidance director at St. Agnes High School in Rochester from 1969-82.

In 1982, Sister Maloy moved to Pine Apple, Ala., where she served in rural health ministry. She worked tirelessly to improve the conditions of the rural poor, helping to extend public water service to remote areas.

When she returned to the motherhouse in 2000, she volunteered at St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center, working with the disadvantaged in Rochester.

Sister Maloy is survived by her cousins, Douglas Johnson and Annette Sanders, and her sisters in the congregation. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on Aug. 29, 2008, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
