Sister of St. Joseph Mary Margaret Merkel, formerly Sister Marie Margaret, died Oct. 29, 2004, at the age of 92.

Having entered the congregation in 1930 from Rochester’s St. Augustine Parish, she earned bachelor’s degrees in education, French and Latin from Nazareth College and a master’s degree in education from Boston College.

She taught at Holy Rosary School in Rochester and was teacher and principal at St. Mary School in Auburn. She then served as teacher and principal of DeSales High School in Geneva and, for 16 years, was principal of St. Agnes High School in Rochester. In 1975 she became director of housekeeping at St. Ann’s Home in Rochester before serving as administrator of the congregation’s convent infirmary.

Following retirement in 1997, she volunteered in the order’s development office and was active in the Genesee Valley Orchestra and Chorus.

Sister Merkel is survived by her niece, Kim Chen; nephew, Dr. Larry Merkel; and her sisters in the congregation. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on Nov. 2, 2004, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
