Sister Mary Roberta Burkhartzmeyer, RSM, 90, died March 23, 2005, at Rochester General Hospital.
She came to Rochester from North Dakota when she was 10 years old. A graduate of Mercy High School and Nazareth Normal School, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1931 from Ss. Peter and Paul Parish.
For 32 years, Sister Burkhartzmeyer taught primary grades in diocesan schools, including Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and Holy Cross in Rochester; St. Ann, Hornell; St. John the Evangelist, Clyde; St. Rita, Webster; and St. Louis, Pittsford. She was then involved until 1976 in pastoral care at Mt. Carmel Parish; St. John the Evangelist in Clyde; and St. Catherine of Siena in Mendon.
In her retirement, she continued her extensive correspondence with area author Henry Clune, wrote poetry and was engaged in prayer ministry.
Sister Mary Roberta is survived by her brother, William (Shirley); several nieces and nephews; and her sisters in the congregation.
Father Albert Delmonte celebrated her Mass of Christian Burial at the motherhouse on March 28, 2005, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Sisters of Mercy, 1437 Blossom Road, Rochester NY 14610.
