Sister Mary Smith, SSND; principal at Rochester schools

School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Smith (formerly Sister Arthur Mary), who was principal at two Rochester Catholic schools, died May 14, 2023. She was 87 years old.

Born in 1936 in Rochester, Sister Smith grew up in St. Boniface Church and graduated from St. Boniface School. She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1954, pronounced her first vows in 1956 and her final vows in 1962.

She taught at St. Lawrence School in Sayville, N.Y. (1957-66); Holy Redeemer School, Rochester (1966-69); and St. Leo School in Stamford, Conn. (1969-73). Sister Smith returned to Rochester in 1973 and served as principal at St. Philip Neri (1973-89), teacher at St. Stanislaus (1989-90) and principal at St. Boniface (1990-2008).

During her time at St. Boniface, Sister Smith started the Diocese of Rochester’s Interscholastic Catholic Schools Spelling Bee. When the school closed, St. Mary School in Canandaigua became the host school and renamed it the Sister Mary Smith Spelling Bee. The event is still held annually in the spring.

In 2008, Sister Smith became the mathematics program supervisor at Rochester’s Notre Dame Learning Center.

Sister Smith is survived by her family, friends and her sisters in the congregation. Her funeral was celebrated at St. Andrew Church in Bridgeport, Conn., May 22, 2023. A Mass of remembrance will take place at St. Boniface Church at a time to be announced.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Notre Dame Learning Center, 71 Parkway, Rochester, NY 14608.
