Sister Mary Sylvester Gehl of the Rochester Sisters of Mercy community and a diocesan teacher for 42 years died July 29, 2005, at the age of 98.
Sister Gehl was a native of Corning and entered the congregation from St. Mary Parish in Corning.
During her teaching career, she served at Holy Family, Auburn; St. Patrick, Elmira; St. Vincent, Corning; St. Ann, Hornell; St. John, Clyde; St. Rita, Webster; St. Charles Borromeo, Greece; St. Louis, Pittsford; St. Thomas the Apostle and St. Salome, Irondequoit, and in Rochester at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, St. John on Humboldt Street and St. Andrew.
She then tutored at St. James in Irondequoit for two years before retiring to the motherhouse where she was volunteer receptionist and served in the spiritual apostolate.
Sister Gehl is survived by several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and the sisters in her community.
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated by Father Celestine Obi in the motherhouse chapel on Aug. 1, 2005, followed by interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
