Mercy Sister Ann Cullen (formerly Sister Mary Lambert), who taught in several Catholic schools in the diocese and in the Rochester City School District, died Nov. 8, 2022. She was 91 years old.
Sister Cullen entered the Sisters of Mercy after graduating from Holy Family High School in Auburn. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Medaille College and a master’s degree in education from Canisius College, both in Buffalo. She also received permanent certification in education from New York state.
She taught in diocesan Catholic schools in Auburn, Corning, Elmira, Irondequoit, Newark, Owego, Pittsford, Rochester and Webster. She also was a teacher and administrator at Annunciation School, Rochester. Sister Cullen served in the Rochester City School District as a home-hospital teacher and in social services at Holy Angels Home.
Upon her retirement in 2000, Sister Cullen coordinated annual sales for the Sisters of Mercy, worked as a receptionist at Mercy Center in Brighton, served as a volunteer when needed and made many items for Kate’s Tea and Gift Shop.
Sister Cullen is survived by her sister, Adelaide Demaso, of Auburn; nieces and nephews; and her sisters in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy will be celebrated in the Mercy Center Chapel in Brighton at 10 a.m. Nov. 14, 2022, with burial at St. Joseph Cemetery in Auburn.
