Sister of Mercy Janet Wahl, 89

Sister of Mercy Janet Wahl (formerly Sister Mary Basil) died May 13, 2022. She was 89.

Sister Wahl entered the congregation in 1950. She taught at St. Salome and St. Thomas the Apostle, Irondequoit, and St. Michael, Newark. She also taught and became vice principal of Elmira Notre Dame High School. She then taught at Cardinal Mooney High School in Greece and Our Lady of Mercy High School in Brighton.

From 1973-77, Sister Wahl served as assistant superior for the Sisters of Mercy of Rochester. She then spent five years as a missionary in Santiago, Chile. Upon returning home, she studied medicine and earned a degree as a physician assistant. She served at Park Ridge Nursing Home, Rochester, and outreach clinics at St. James Mercy Health, Troupsburg Heath Centers, and urgent care centers in Hornell and Cameron Valley, all located in the Southern Tier.

In 2001, she joined the Encuentro Ministry, serving migrant farmworkers and Hispanic immigrants living in the Rochester area. She also volunteered for eight years in the Brockport Migrant Education Outreach Program.

Sister Wahl is survived by family, friends and sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the Mercy Center Chapel in Brighton May 20, 2022.
