Sister of Mercy Kathleen Flaherty, 90

Sister of Mercy Kathleen Flaherty (formerly Sister Mary Owen) died Sept. 5, 2018. She was 90 years old.

Sister Flaherty entered the congregation on Sept. 2, 1946, and professed her final vows on Aug. 24, 1952.

She taught at St. John the Evangelist, Clyde; St. Cecilia, St. Thomas the Apostle and St. Salome, Irondequoit; St. Patrick, Elmira; St. Charles Borromeo, Greece; St. Joseph, Penfield; and Good Shepherd, Henrietta. While teaching every day, she earned her bachelor’s degree in education.

In 1978, she and the late Sister Carol Wulforst cofounded Tioga Rural Ministry, which today continues serving the needs of those living in Tioga County.

In 1982, Sister Flaherty became a health-care aide and programming assistant with Rochester Visiting Nurse Service. She also served in the volunteer spiritual apostolate at Good Shepherd Parish for 10 years. She also was a candlemaker at the Mercy Center in Brighton.

Sister Flaherty is survived by her brother-in-law, Thomas Hanley; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at the Mercy Center chapel on Sept. 11, 2018, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
