Sister of Mercy Mary Esther Carstater died March 12, 2019. She was 87 years old.

Sister Carstater entered the congregation from Sacred Heart Parish in Jamestown in 1949. She graduated from Catholic High School in Elmira, where she was influenced by Sister Mary Joachim Pearson to consider a religious vocation.

Following the death of her father, Sister Carstater became a world-traveling companion to her mother, Gertrude. They visited 55 countries on six continents.

In her retirement, Sister Carstater oversaw the Sisters of Mercy library and volunteered two weeks each summer ministering to mothers and their children at The Children’s Center in Bedford Hills, N.Y. She also was the author of inspirational poetry and had several poems published in the National Poetry Anthology.

Sister Carstater is survived by several cousins and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at the Mercy Center chapel in Brighton on March 19, 2019, with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 1437 Blossom Road, Rochester, NY 14610.
