Sister of Mercy Mary Howard Cowan, a registered nurse for 70 years, died Jan. 3, 2021. She was 97.
Sister Cowan attended Holy Family parish and school in Auburn and entered the congregation in 1946, professing perpetual vows six years later.
She graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester in 1951 and worked in the motherhouse infirmary for 20 years. She then worked at Brighton’s Our Lady of Mercy High School and Rochester’s Flower City Nursing Home. She returned to Auburn to care for her parents and also worked at Mercy Hospital.
In late 1984, she and fellow Sister Mary Rose Schum started Mercy Care Center, an adult social day care in Elmira that they operated for 23 years.
Sister Cowan is survived by her nieces and nephews; close friend and nursing partner Sister Schum; and her sisters in the congregation. Due to COVID-19, a memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date. Burial was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
