Sister of St. Joseph Barbara Orczyk, 82

Sister of St. Joseph Barbara Orczyk (formerly Sister Paulissa), who served primarily as a missionary during her religious life, died May 4, 2023. She was 82 years old.

Sister Orczyk entered the congregation in 1958 from her home parish of St. Stanislaus Kostka, Rochester. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Nazareth College in 1968 and a physician’s assistant degree from SUNY Stony Brook in 1976.

She began teaching at St. Stanislaus in 1961 and also taught at Blessed Sacrament before later responding to the call for missionaries in Brazil. After a period of study, she was assigned as director of an elementary school and pastoral agent in Itaguasu, Brazil.

She returned to Rochester to complete her physician’s assistant degree then returned to Brazil to work in the municipal health clinic in Itaguacu. Sister Orczyk served as regional coordinator for the congregation in Brazil for a few years before returning to direct the health clinic. Later, she took a position in pastoral care/administration until returning to Rochester in 2010.

Toward the end of her life, Sister Orczyk volunteered at St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish working with families and youths.

Sister Orczyk is survived by her brother, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, friends and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at the motherhouse chapel May 9, 2023, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
