Sister of St. Joseph Josepha Twomey, 86

Sister of St. Joseph Josepha Twomey died Jan. 19, 2021. She was 86 years old.

Sister Twomey entered the congregation in 1952 from her home parish of St. Mary Church, Auburn. She earned bachelor’s degrees in education in 1958 and in English in 1966, both from Nazareth College.

In 1955, she began teaching at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Brighton and also taught at St. Mary, Dansville; Guardian Angels, Henrietta; and Corpus Christi and St. Lucy, Rochester. She also served as principal at St. Lucy. Sister Twomey also taught at St. Elizabeth in Selma, Ala.

From 1968-78, Sister Twomey worked in community ministry, first at Immaculate Conception Parish, briefly in Perkinsville, and then at the diocesan Office of Human Development for seven years. In 1978, she served as chaplain at Elmira Correctional Facility. After 10 years in Elmira, she was assigned to the Southport Correctional Facility in Pine City, where she remained until her retirement in 1995. She then worked in Sisters Care in Elmira until she moved to the motherhouse in Pittsford in 2013.

Sister Twomey is survived by her sister, Marilyn; cousins; friends; and her sisters in the congregation. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at the motherhouse chapel Jan. 25, 2021, with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
