Sister of St. Joseph Marie Lawrence Mayer, 95

Sister of St. Joseph Marie Lawrence Mayer died Jan. 29, 2008. She was 95 years old.

She entered the order in 1932 from her home parish of Corpus Christi in Rochester, and received her teacher’s certificate from Nazareth Normal School in 1937. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 1947 from Nazareth College in Pittsford, a bachelor’s degree in home economics from Pennsylvania’s Marywood College in 1950 and a master’s degree in home management from Cornell University in 1956.

Sister Mayer taught at St. Alphonsus School in Auburn and at St. Ambrose and Sacred Heart Cathedral schools in Rochester. In 1943, she became a business teacher at Rochester’s Nazareth Academy and returned there after completing her degree at Marywood College. From 1950-78, she taught home economics at Nazareth Academy and served as department chair for the last 10 of those years. From 1978-86 she worked in the school’s main office and in the library. After retiring in 1986, she served as convent treasurer for 10 years.

She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Lois Mayer and Betty Mayer; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated on Jan. 31, 2008, in the motherhouse chapel with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
