Sister Rose Clare Welpe, OSF, a Rochester native, died May 4, 2008, in Tampa, Fla. She was 86.
Sister Welpe entered the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of the Allegany from Greece’s St. Charles Borromeo Parish on Aug. 15, 1945 and professed final vows Aug. 16, 1952.
She received her bachelor of science degree in education from St. Elizabeth Teacher’s College in Allegany, N.Y. She taught at schools in Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia and Florida. In 1974, she began ministering to parishioners and the aged in Florida. She retired to Tampa in 1991.
Sister Welpe is survived by several nieces and nephews and her sisters in the congregation.
A Mass of Christian Burial took place May 9, 2008, in Tampa, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Fla.
A memorial Mass was May 14, 2008, in the chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany.
