Sister Seraphine Herbst, SSJ, 85

Sister of St. Joseph Seraphine Herbst, who was principal at School of the Holy Childhood for 47 years, died Aug. 6, 2016. She was 85 years old.

She entered the congregation in 1947 from her home parish of St. Ambrose in Rochester. She earned a bachelor’s of education in 1958 from Nazareth College. She completed a master’s of arts in special education at Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee, Wis., in 1963. She also received a certificate of advanced study in 1983 and a certification in administration/supervision in 1985 from SUNY Brockport.

Sister Herbst taught at St. Mary in Elmira, and at St. Monica and Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester. In 1959, she was assigned to teach at School of the Holy Childhood. She became principal in 1962, a position she held for 47 years. In 1977, she also was appointed executive director. She retired in 2009, but continued to serve as a consultant and mentor to administrators, teachers, families and board members at the school.

Sister Herbst is survived by her sister-in-law; nieces and nephews; many friends; and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel in Pittsford on Aug. 12, 2016, with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
