World Refugee Day is observed internationally on June 20, raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world. In 1995, at the age of 10, Abdullahi Mohamed escaped civil war in his home country of Somalia and moved to a refugee camp in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. He lived in the camp for 17 years before being resettled in the United States. He now works at Mary’s Place in Rochester, serving in refugee outreach.
