Several area Catholics received Works of Love awards during the annual Catholic Charities of Chemung/Schuyler Social Ministry Dinner June 3.

Award winners were:

Joe and Mary Sue Skelly, Doug and Sandee Johnson, and Mark and Sandy Mentuck, all from St. Mary Our Mother Parish in Horseheads. The three couples serve on the parish social ministry committee and were noted for their long-term leadership with the annual Christmas Basket project.

Elinor Along-Messner, from Chemung County Ladies of Charity. She was recognized for coordinating the monthly newsletter and taking part in such projects as public-policy advocacy, Christmas visits to Miller Manor, Easter baskets for 100 local children, the Catholic Charities Back to School initiative and meals at Elmira Community Kitchen.

Peg Johnson, from Parish of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. She helps to organize the parish social ministry committee’s public-policy advocacy initiatives, assists in coordinating the annual Christmas Basket project, prepares meals at Elmira Community Kitchen and participates in all the committee’s projects throughout the year.

Tina and Rebecca Shannon, from Notre Dame High School. For several years, the mother and daughter have provided leadership to Notre Dame volunteers at Elmira Community Kitchen on the first Wednesday of each month. They help plan the meal, shop for supplies, and assist the team of students, parents and faculty in preparing and serving dinner.
