Speak out on RHAPP

To the editor:

This past Good Friday, many Rochester area Catholics took part in a peaceful annual prayer march to the site of an abortion clinic at 2020 South Clinton Ave.

After the prayer march, I stayed with another person to continue to pray and offer help to those entering this abortion clinic. In the time we stayed, we saw at least seven women leave this clinic after having had abortions. Each time, their boyfriend or husband drove their car up to the entrance and the woman would emerge walking slowly, “assisted” by clinic personnel to the car. These women were of different ages and races, but written upon the face of each was the tragedy of what they had just allowed to happen to them and their child on this Good Friday.

“Go into the streets and proclaim the Gospel of Life!” These words of the late Pope John Paul II have impelled me over the last dozen years to try and do my small part to witness to the sanctity of human life. As Catholics, we need to not be afraid to do this.

Some in New York State right now wish to further entrench legal abortion by a bill known as the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act or S.5829. Speak up, write, send e-mails, make phone calls, pray at area abortion clinics, but do something. There are many evils in the world today, but if we can find a way to successfully protect life again at its beginning, perhaps we will find that in doing so we will have gone a long ways toward increasing respect for human life at all stages.
