Sr. Dorothy Marie Schantz, SSJ

Sister of St. Joseph Dorothy Marie Schantz, 89, died March 12, 2004, at the SSJ Motherhouse in Brighton.
 

Sister Schantz, a native of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Rochester, entered the congregation in 1930 and went on to earn two bachelor’s degrees from Nazareth College
 
.

She taught for 38 years in diocesan schools, including St. Francis Xavier, Corpus Christi, St. Bridget and Our Lady of Lourdes, in Rochester; Ss. Peter and Paul, Elmira; and St. John the Evangelist, Greece.
 

Following her teaching years, she served in the convent infirmary and was director of the altar bread department for 12 years. In her retirement, she was active in the prayer apostolate and visitation of the sick, particularly within the congregation and at Mt. Carmel Hospice.
 

Sister Schantz is survived by her nieces and nephews and her sisters in the congregation. Father Dennis Bonsignore celebrated her funeral liturgy in the motherhouse chapel on March 15. Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
