Sister of St. Joseph Helen Anne Barry, 89, died Jan. 3, 2008, at the congregation’s motherhouse in Pittsford.
Sister Barry entered the congregation from her home parish of Ss. Peter and Paul in Rochester in 1936 and completed Nazareth Normal School in 1939. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music in 1950 and a master’s degree in music education in 1957, both from Nazareth College in Pittsford.
She began teaching grammar school in 1940 at Sacred Heart and St. Monica schools in Rochester and St. Patrick School in Corning. In 1952 she became a full-time instrumental-music teacher at Blessed Sacrament and St. Ambrose schools, Rochester; St. Jerome, East Rochester; and St. Pius Tenth, Chili. In 1966 she participated in the Suzuki Institute at Eastman School of Music. From then on she became an eminent Suzuki instructor, teaching hundreds of children in Rochester as well as joining the summer faculty at Ithaca College, Greater Washington Suzuki Institute at Catholic University and Harvard University. She retired in 1995.
Sister Barry is survived by her sister, Rita B. White; her sister-in-law, Mary Jeanne Barry; several nieces and nephews; and her sisters in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the motherhouse chapel on Jan. 7, 2008, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
