Sister of St. Joseph Kathleen (Caritas) Burns died Dec. 13, 2007, at the congregation’s motherhouse in Pittsford. She was 72.
Sister Burns entered the congregation in 1953 from her home parish of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester. She received a bachelor’s degree in education in 1960 and a bachelor’s degree in history in 1963, both from Nazareth College in Pittsford.
She taught for 20 years in various diocesan schools, including St. Ambrose and Corpus Christi in Rochester; St. Theodore, Gates; and St. Thomas More, Brighton. For three years she served as personnel director for the congregation then performed secretarial work for central administration at St. Jerome School in East Rochester.
In 1987, Sister Burns earned an associate’s degree from Rochester Institute of Technology and worked as an interpreter for the deaf in the BOCES program until 1996. She then served as director of the congregation’s associate program until her retirement in 2003.
Sister Burns is survived by her sisters and brother-in-law, Martha Jane Snyder, Anne Burns Shoniker, Margaret Duffy Burns and Teresa (David) Loftus; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and her sisters in the congregation.
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at the motherhouse chapel on Dec. 19, 2007, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
