Blessed Damien of Molokai Council 11411 of the Knights of Columbus, which is affiliated with Rochester’s St. Anne Church and Brighton’s Our Lady of Lourdes Church, has earned for 2005-06 the distinction of “Star Council,” the Knights of Columbus’s top award.
The award recognizes overall excellence in the areas of membership recruitment and retention; promotion of a fraternal insurance program; and sponsorship of service activities. The international organization’s headquarters in New Haven, Conn., made the announcement in a July letter from Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson to Angelito Martin, Past Grand Knight of Council 11411.
Anderson also stated that Council 11411 received the elite “Double Star Recognition” for having gone above and beyond the membership quota by doubling its membership. In fact, Martin said that Council 11411’s membership quadrupled in 2005-06, and the council was one of only 381 councils out of 14,112 worldwide to receive this award. Council 11411 currently has 123 members.
Although the Blessed Damien Council is affiliated with St. Anne and Our Lady of Lourdes, it draws members not only from those sister parishes but also from other parishes in the greater Rochester area, according to council officials.
“We’re extremely proud of these accomplishments,” Martin said, attributing the success of the council in earning the awards to the dedication of the membership in helping others in the church and community through such programs as soccer and basketball events for young people; blood drives; hospital visitations; and support for a variety of Catholic ministries.
