St. Mary’s Campus to mark 150 years

Unity Health System will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the St. Mary’s Campus with a series of community events in October. The celebration will include taking a group photograph of former and current employees, volunteers, patients and friends at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Unity St. Mary’s Campus, 89 Genesee Street Entrance. Also, from 12:30 to 3 p.m., a reception and viewing of the new Unity St. Mary’s Campus Heritage Display will take place in the East/West Auditorium.

As part of the celebration, Unity also is seeking stories from former and current physician employees, volunteers and patients who want to share their memories. People can submit stories by clicking on the Unity St. Mary’s Campus Celebration Banner at www.unityhealth.org. Selected entries will be posted on the St. Mary’s Campus Memories Web page.

The Daughters of Charity founded the hospital in 1857 in response to cholera epidemics in 1855 and 1856, St. Mary’s was Rochester’s first hospital and treated sick and wounded soldiers during the Civil War. In recent years, St. Mary’s merged with Park Ridge Hospital to form the Unity system. The Daughters of Charity left the hospital in 2000.
